ABOUT

What will happen during class?

During classes students will develop skills such as kicking, punching, stances and blocking. They will then advance those same techniques through the development of fighting skills and controlled sparring (fighting).
As students progress, they will begin to learn pre-determined patterns (kata) and more advanced kicking and striking techniques, including jumping, spinning and self defence skills. Students will also develop fitness and conditioning and basic gymnastics and agility skills.
Students will be given the opportunity to progress through the belt system each term, their progress will depend on their commitment to training as well as their application during class.
Our boxing classes focus on the development of pure boxing skills including both offensive and defensive techniques and heavily focuses on partner work, pad work and fitness and conditioning.
For those who wish to take their training further, we are able to introduce and slowly develop students through sparring. Those students who do wish to learn to spar, they must first purchase all of the required safety gear.
CLASS

Our Philosophy

Classes are run by Luke Byrne (4th Dan), who has been practicing martial arts for well over 30 years.
During that time he has competed in and won many State, National and International tournaments.
Luke’s back ground as a physical education teacher and sports science specialist has given him a unique and much sort after approach to teaching young and old alike.
His philosophy of engaging all students through challenging them to
be their best in all aspects of their lives, helps him to reach his ultimate goal of developing each students physical abilities as well as their character (self) through the practise of martial arts.
When Luke refers to the “self” he refers to a student’s self-confidence, self-control and self-concept.

Self-Confidence

Luke teaches students the difference between exhibiting confidence which is determined by external praise and reward. And true SELF-confidence which is determined by a students acceptance and understanding of themselves through being challenged both physically and mentally and ultimately triumphing. True Self-Confidence can not be affected by external influences, it is developed and maintained internally.

Self-Control

When learning karate it is important that students develop a high level of skill in order to control their techniques. This helps students to be able to deliver fast and powerful techniques without causing injury to themselves or others.
However, self-control also refers to a student’s ability to control their emotions, thoughts and actions. This practice begins at the earliest opportunity by teaching young students to focus and by teaching the three skills of listening.
Being able to control your emotions and thoughts is an important skill to ensure that students can achieve their fullest potential in all aspects of their lives.

Self-Concept

Students are encouraged to examine both their strengths and limitations and to accept them.
This helps students to develop a positive self-concept. This works hand in hand with developing self-confidence. Students are encouraged to be themselves and not fall victim to peer pressure.
They are taught that through daily practice and persevering with positive habits and rituals they can further develop themselves into the person they envisage to become.

These concepts are taught throughout our programs using age specific dialogue and tasks set through completion of our ‘Grading Pack’ each term.

How Karate Improved my life

– a personal journey.
We are told that Martial Arts improves discipline, confidence, resilience, focus, control etc… but is this true? And if it is, how does it achieve this?
For me it was definitely true, and I’d like to tell you how it happened.
I’ve been training in the Martial Arts for almost 30 years. When I first started training, it was because I wanted to be a Ninja Turtle. But as I continued training, something happened, my mindset changed. It didn’t happen during the first 12 months, or even 2 years of training.
During this early time my motivation was simple. I wanted to be able to do cool kicks and move like Bruce Lee and Jean Claude Van-Damme (Movie stars of my time). But the longer I trained, the more my motivation began to shift. My understanding of myself and the Martial Arts became deeper and more fulfilling. The only thing I can compare it to is like a life long friendship or relationship.
If you are lucky enough to have a close, long term friend or partner, something initially draws you towards each other, and as time goes on, you learn more about each other, and you both grow and develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of each other. Your connection goes beyond your initial attraction and becomes something much stronger.
The Martial Arts was like no other sport I had ever played. I had competed at a high level in Junior football and swimming. But gave it all up for karate and the martial arts. As I trained and progressed, And taught my body new skills, I became obsessed with pushing myself to develop strength, speed, endurance, knowledge and to basically be the best version of myself. And initially, that simply meant the best Martial Artist I could be…
As I continued training my desire to be my best in karate spread to other aspects of my life. I went from not wanting to attend university, to graduating with honours, topping my class in subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, advanced biomechanics and motor learning. Scoring near perfect marks in all subjects. I desired to simply be the best person I could be. Both in the dojo and in the “real” world.
I competed in State, National and World Titles in karate with success. I travelled the world competing and training for many years. But still, the real benefit from my training was in the development of my character.
It has been the discipline and consistency of my training that has had the biggest impact on my life. When inevitably, tough times occurred in my personal life. The one constant I had, was my training. When everything else was falling apart, I stayed consistent. And the mindset that I had developed from that training made me realise very important lessons. There were many times when I simply wanted to quit. Every year I would go through stages where I just wanted to walk away. But those times would pass. And it was my commitment and dedication to improvement that got me through those times. And always, I would come out the other side more motivated and more resilient than ever before.

Lesson 1 :

You will go through tough times where you feel overwhelmed and you want to give up. During these times, KNOW that you have the STRENGTH to carry on and you will pass through it.

Lesson 2 :

Be consistent. Form the habits early and maintain them during the tough times. Continue to do those positive things that add value to your life. When you have strong, positive habits, they will give you the strength you need to get through. And when you ultimately come out the other side. Your life will still be in tact, and won’t spiral out of control.

Lesson 3 :

Breathe and practice control. Meditate, stay focused on the now and when all else fails, just remember that you are striving to be the best version of yourself. And that’s enough!!!

Lesson 4 :

People will have an issue with you, and that’s ok. It’s only when you have an issue with yourself that it becomes a problem. Always strive to DO your best, always strive to BE your best and always accept responsibility for your actions and forgive yourself, to be able to move on.

Lesson 5 :

Surround yourself with people who have the same mindset. Strengthen your vision by finding mentors who set the example you wish to follow. And focus on the positives in your life! You can’t form a positive action with a negative thought!!!

Lesson 6 :

Evolve your thinking by accepting and analysing new information constantly.

We will always be a work in progress, and there will always be hard times.
But I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to pass my lessons onto my students and to my son.
Success starts within!
